The weather was hot and sunny for the 2012 edition of Manitoba Karting Association’s Mid-Canada Karting Classic at the Red River Exhibition Park in Winnipeg. Karters from Manitoba, Saskatchewan, and Ontario showed up to try out the challenging circuit which had a hairpin turn, a long sweeper and a light bulb shaped turn section in the infield. With the hot weather the track surface was very grippy, and provided several passing areas. Sponsors for the Mid-Canada Karting Classic were NAPA Auto Parts, Red River CO-OP, Woodhaven Lexus Toyota, ENNS Brothers, Investors Group, Red River Exhibition Park, and GBR Karting.
Highlights of Saturday Race
Saturday started with Daniel Burkett of GBR Karting giving a demonstration to the crowd how fast a kart can go by flying around the track in his DD2 Rotax. The first class up on Saturday was the biggest class, 17 karts started Senior Four Stroke. On pole was John Buzza who managed to lead from start to finish, with Ian Brown finishing second and Trent Despins third. In Mini Max, Bryson McDonald lead to the flag edging out Garrett Gulenchyn in second, and Jeff Fulham in third. In Senior Rotax, Jeff Bachalo won, with Tyler Perreaux second, and Jeff Lopushniuk third. The Junior Rotax class had John Buzza take the win over Morgan McDonald and Alexis Budel. The combined Junior 1 Four Stroke/Micro Max race saw Brad Bachalo hold off Robert Schiewe for the Junior 1 Four Stroke win. Micro Max had Logan McDonald winning over Rylan Despin and Curtis Veselinovich. In Junior 2 Four Stroke, Garrett Gulenchyn lead from flag-to-flag, with Micheal Copp second and Wyatt Lajoie third.
On Sunday, Mini Max this time went to Fulham, who got the lead edging out Gulenchyn and McDonald. In Senior Rotax, Bachalo won, with Tyler Perreaux second, and Josh Zilkie third. The Junior Rotax class had Buzza starting at the back and running into a hay bale in the first turn, he still managed to catch up and carve through the field to take the win over Jordan Brown and Micheal Copp. The battle in Junior Rotax between second through fifth place was so intense, that the crowd cheered the loudest when these karts were coming off the track at the end of the race. The combined Junior 1 Four Stroke/Micro Max witnessed McDonald win Micro Max over Despin and Veselinovich. Bachalo won Junior 1 Four Stroke with Robert Schieve. In Junior 2 Four Stroke, Gulenchyn won, with Copp second and Brittney Fortier third. The last class up on Sunday was the biggest class, Senior Four Stroke. On pole was Saturday’s winner Buzza, but he got tangled up with other karts in the first corner and was knocked back to 11th place on the first lap. Buzza climbed back up to third place before running into a lapped kart two laps from the end. The winner of Senior Four Stroke was Brown, edging out Roland Fortier and Yakov Zaretskin. Burkett, who was trying out a Briggs kart, finished fourth.
With plenty of good racing to showcase karting at a really nice facility right in the city of Winnipeg, everyone’s looking forward to next year’s Mid-Canada Karting Classic.
