| Kart Stars Grand Prix of Toronto a Roaring Success |
The inaugural Kart Stars Grand Prix of Toronto proved to be a good success over the weekend (July 7-8), with not only some great Rotax racing, but plenty of fans taking in the action as part of the Honda Indy Toronto.
The DD2 race featured a flag-to flag run from polesitter Eric Gerrits (TonyKart). While Darren White (TonyKart), Blake Reith (CRG), Frank Launi (GP), and Enrico Menotti (Intrepid) remained in contention for top honors for the majority of the race - White spun while attempting a pass falling down the order - Gerrits was not to be denied. Overcoming a full-course caution, Gerrits scored a comfortable win over Launi and Menotti.
Austin Milwain (TonyKart) was the driver to beat in Senior. Having led all the previous sessions, Milwain never relinquished the lead in the 50-lap Final, cruising to a nearly 10 second win. Max Preston (Intrepid) initially looked to have the runner-up position secured until an engine failure promoted Bryson Schutte (Intrepid) to second place. Arika White (TonyKart) likewise was in position for a podium finish, before some trouble with a lapped kart allowed Reid Arnold (Intrepid) to move up to third and take the final podium position at the stripe.
The fight for Junior top honors proved to be an entertaining affair on the temporary track located just outside the entrance to the IndyCar Series pitlane. Matthew Peralto (Birel), Kyle Doma (Intrepid), and Marco Signoretti (Intrepid) dueled for the lead early on, before some light contact between Peraulto and Doma resulted in the current leader Peraulto spinning. That proved to be the turning point of the race, as Doma ran mistake free the remainder the race, leading Signoretti second and Adam Martin (Maranello) to the checkered flag.
The Masters race was just as eventful, with plenty of bumping and passing. John Cariati (Intrepid) ultimately drove a patient race and capitalized on trouble for the early front-runners Enrico Frisco (Intrepid) and Jayson Nazario (Energy) to score the class win. David Nevin (Birel) and Ashique Bhaloo (Praga) were next to the line to complete the top-three.
In Mini Max Joe Soranno (LH) was the driver to watch. Soranno was able to run fastest laps in the race in order to successfully convert his pole position into a win. Devlin DeFrancesco (CRG) held off assorted challenges to finish second, while Tyler McCullough (Tonykart) came home in third.
Micro Max proved to be a family affair, with Alessandro Famularo (Intrepid) scoring the win over his twin brother Anthony Famularo (Intrepid). Polesitter Matthew Barry (Intrepid) led early-on, but contact with lapped kart ended his race prematurely. Maximilian Horbik (Praga) took home third place, having dueled with Anthony Famularo for the majority of the race.
In addition to the racing action on Saturday and Sunday, the event raised significant funds for the Sunnybrook Foundation and the Sunnybrook Hospital Women and Babies Program via the Bay Street Grand Prix charity event. |
