Series News: Western Canadian Challenge announces 2010 program

The Western Canadian Challenge, the only official Rotax Max qualifier with direct invitations to Team Canada, is set to take on their fourth season of racing. The WCC continues to grow in scope and entries as western racers look to grab a spot on Team Canada and a trip to the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals. The series will include two of the same venues as last season with competitors trekking from the western shores of British Columbia, to the rolling hills of Alberta, to the flat lands of Saskatchewan. The new track joining the WCC program for 2010 is Stratotech Raceway located just outside of Edmonton, Alberta. The distance from Chilliwack to Saskatoon will see drivers cover nearly 1,600 kms one way, making the WCC one of the largest RMC’s by distance covered, taking in four provinces. The great support and program created by such as wide and diverse group shows the strength of karting in Western Canada.

“I am really excited about the 2010 season,” states WCC organizer and Overdrive Motorsports owner Joey Guyon. “We are much further ahead on our planning this season and that is great for all the volunteers and racers. I expect more entries this season than last year.”

The format for competition will stay similar to 2009 and will continue to include a testing ban at every race track from Monday to Wednesday leading up to the race which includes any registered driver. On Thursday there will be non-official practice hosted by the local club at their regular test and tune price and under test and tune insurance for that club or track.

Friday will see official practice get underway hosted by the WCC at $25 per driver per class, an amazing value. The race format will again include a separate Saturday and Sunday schedule. Each day will consist of a morning warm-up, timed qualifying followed Prefinal and Final races. Laps will be set per track length and available track time.

Registration for a WCC weekend event will be $170 for both days with a $20 pre-registration discount and a 2nd class can be added for only $80. On site camping will be free of charge at all events, although no services will be available. Information on pre-registration will be available soon. Registration for Chilliwack opens Monday April 12th, 2010 and closes Friday May 14th, 2010.

The WCC will again this year have three, guaranteed invitations to Team Canada and the RMCGF. The recent announcement of a separate Rotax DD2 Masters class may see the WCC get one additional invite when the final program is announced by Rotax officials. Also new this season, the WCC will be offering all the Rotax Max classes. Two qualification races will be required for Rotax Junior and Rotax Senior classes prior to the Stratotech round of the championship. DD2 classes will not require any qualification races. Eastern drivers may participate in the WCC and will also require two qualifiers prior to the Stratotech round in their own region. Proof of completed qualifiers will be required to register for the event. Official details to be released shortly.

“We support the WCC organizers and really appreciate all the effort the volunteers put into the program,” comments Patrick Moreau, National RMC Coordinator. “The WCC covers more distance and provinces then any other RMC and really helps to tie the west together.”

Rotax Max classes will include the ultra quick cadet based program of Micro Max along with the first of the junior classes, Mini Max. Rotax Junior Max will hit the track with a trip to the Grand Finals on the line. Also looking to make team Canada will be the Senior Max class and the two-speed DD2 classes. Masters DD2 will be a class offered racers in the WCC. The series will also run Rotax Masters within Rotax Senior and will be separated if there are over ten entries in Masters.

The WCC has some major changes in the support classes, which are all in the four-cycle category. The WCC will continue to support the Honda classes as they have in the past. This season will see two different engine packages from Briggs and Stratton introduced into the program. Support classes may be combined into groups or separated and a minimum of six pre-registered drivers are required per group in order to compete.

Support classes:
4 cycle J1 Honda
4 cycle J2 Honda
World Formula Junior
World Formula Light
World Formula Heavy
Briggs Animal Senior
Honda Light
Honda Heavy

Supplementary regulations for Round One will be released after the receipt of official RMC Canadian Regulations and ASN Regulations. All efforts will be made to inform racers as soon as possible. Keep an eye on eKartingNews.ca for more updates and information on the Western Canadian Challenge.
