Industry News: 2010 Rotax Max Challenge Rules Primer

The following is a list of new rules and changes to existing rules for all Rotax Max Challenge series. As usual, the Rotax Max Challenge regulations assure a continuity with only few changes, in particular to introduce the new parts which improve the Rotax engines and the competition itself. We would like to bring your attention on the following modifications but this is not an exhaustive list of modifications. An attentive reading of the new regulations is necessary by all Rotax Service Centres and competitors to see all of them. It is always a great idea to read through the regulations. It's one thing you can do to improve your Rotax program that cost.

SPORTING REGULATION
Age for Rotax Max Junior & Senior classes
The age regulation for Junior, Senior and DD2 classes has changed to reflect the new CIK-FIA regulation. To be eligible to race in Junior, the competitor must have his 13th birthday during the year. To race in Senior or DD2, the competitor must have is 15th birthday during the year.

Appointment of a technical inspector by the National RMC Organizer
One of the main complaints in the last survey is related to the technical inspection during the RMC events. To assure a constancy in the technical inspection, the National Organizer may appoint a technical inspector at any RMC event. This inspector will have the same power as the chief inspector of the event regarding the Rotax classes.

New class at the Rotax Max Challenge Grand Finals
Until this year, the top three Masters drivers in the DD2 class in the final results of the RMCGF received a trophy. For 2010, a new class will compete at the RMCGF: the DD2 Masters class. Thirty-four Masters drivers (32 y.o. and up) will compete all together. We applied to have three spots in the DD2 masters class, but they are not confirmed yet. If they are confirmed, the Nationals for the DD2 masters champion and runner-up will be invited to competed at the RMCGF, same for the WCC Champion. More details to come on this.

TECHNICAL REGULATION
Balance shaft
The old version of the balance shaft (Rotax part # 237945, last year of production: 2001) is not legal anymore. The last year of production of this part was 2001. For Service Centres, this part must be checked when servicing old engines.

Balance gears
To avoid confusion, it is not allowed to mix the different configuration of steel gears (narrow and wide versions)

Batteries
Some old battery models (FG20651 and FG20722) are not legal anymore

Centrifugal clutch
The old version of the centrifugal clutch is not legal anymore in the international RMC regulation. This version is still legal in Canada but this is the last year. For Micro Max and Mini-Max classes, the old clutch is not mandatory anymore. Many measures have been introduced in the regulation regarding the clutch shoe and the clutch drum. For the new version of the centrifugal clutch, the o-ring and the needle bearing must be in place (except if the competitor use the 11 teeth sprocket).

Intake silencer
The old version of the intake silencer (airbox) is not legal anymore.
Carburetion
It has been specified that carburettor insert 12.5 must be used with combination 1 (5.2 gr floats, 30-30 jets) and carburettor insert 8.5 must be used with combination 2 (3.6 gr, 60-60 jets).

Fuel filter
It has been specified that nothing, except the fuel line, the fuel pump and the original Rotax fuel filter, can be installed between the fuel tank and the fuel pump. Non original fuel filter are not legal anymore.

Exhaust system
The new version of the exhaust system (with springs) has been introduced in the regulation. The new exhaust is exactly the same except the after muffler with is not welded anymore but fixed with springs to avoid cracking.

New shift paddle system for DD2
Participants at the last RMCGF used them and they were unanimous: they are fantastic to use. According to info received in Egypt, it must be available at Rotax in February. They will send us a circular letter as soon as they will be available with the price.

Micro-Max class Cylinder
2010 is the last year where the 2008 cylinder is mandatory in this class. From 2011, 2008 cylinder or more recent can be used.

Note: with the purchase of a new junior Max engine with the micro max kit, the 2008 cylinder will be provided to the customer for free.

Mini-MaxIntake restrictor
As announced last year, the version 2 of the intake restrictor (ROTAX part no. 267 530) is not legal anymore to be used in Canada.
