Event News: Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship - Round #6 Kawartha Speedway - Preview

The Brian Stewart Racing Karting Championship begins it’s final weekend of racing action for the 2009 season with round six taking place this Labour Day long weekend. Racing will start with official series practice being held on Saturday followed by two full days of competition on Sunday and holiday Monday. The BSRKC has enjoyed amazing competition all season long with loyal karters swelling the entries to record numbers. This final round at the exciting Kawartha Speedway will be no exception as racers look to finish off the season with strong performances.

“We changed this weekend’s schedule to make things a little easier for the drivers and teams,” comments Enzo Chiovitti, Simcoe Kart Club President and BSRKC Principal. “We have to work with the Kawartha facility as they have other events taking place.”

The final round will see all 14 classes take to this unique road/oval configuration. At the end of competition, 14 champions will be crowned. The final round is a test of speed, skill and math. As drivers run through their maybe tables (maybe we can win, maybe we can’t), they work their spreadsheets to find where they need to be to take the title. Here is a class-by-class breakdown of where the standings sit. Disclaimer: None of these numbers or calculations are official in any way.

Cadet
Ryley Hume leads the way with 450 points, just 13 points over Joshua Conquer at 437 and 16 up on Taylor Wassink at 434. This class has seen four different winners in five races with Wassink the only double race winner so far this season. Hume is winless in 2009 and will look to change that in Kawartha this weekend.

Novice
In the Novice class Clay Van Eerd, having an outstanding 2009 season, looks to have the championship locked up going into the final round. Van Eerd heads in with 551 total points, 119 over second place.

Junior Lite
Leading the way in the Junior Lite category is Scott Nagel with 533, 53 points up on second place Grant Quinlan, who has a mathematical shot at the title. Nagel will need to take the green to clinch the championship. Sitting in third is Trevor Rancier who looks well positioned for his first win of the season.

Junior Medium
A Saturday class, this group is a mix of Lite and Heavy drivers looking to get a handle on the track for Sunday action. The formula works well as 46 drivers ran the class in 2009. Scott Nagel from Lite leads the way over Cory Cacciavillani from Heavy by only 30 points, with the two drivers sharing all five wins in 2009. Cacciavillani would take the win in round one and round five besting the largest field in Junior four cycle action at 37. Nagel would go on an impressive mid-season run, taking three straight win in rounds two, three and four. Look for an exciting battle at the front of this one.

Junior Heavy
A close battle looms as the two frontrunners look to grab bragging rights. Tristan Gill leads with 480, just 19 points ahead of Cory Cacciavillani. Both drivers have two wins on the season, with Cacciavillani coming off a strong round five in Shannonville. Artem Korolev still has an outside shot back 88 points of Gill. The last lap of this race should be a barnburner.

Senior Lite
The title looks good for Jonathan Treadwell as he heads into round six with a 36 point lead over Michael Glaze. The two have battled at the front all season, with Treadwell the only double race winner so far in 2009. Round three winner Kevin Monteith is still in the hunt and looks to score his second win of 2009 having grabbed top spot in the rain soaked round three.

Senior Heavy
The largest class in BSRKC so far in 2009 has seen 55 drivers take the green flag. TJ Marshall is leading the way with 463, just 24 points up on Michael Glaze, who sits second in both Honda classes. Glaze is winless in Senior Heavy in 2009 and looks to take the win and the title away from Marshall in what will be a great race. Sitting in third and within earshot of the leaders is AJ Emms, who is 71 points back of first place and looking for his first win of 2009. Winner of the last two races, Dave Patrick is well back in the points having missed the first three rounds. So far Patrick is two for two in race wins and may look to play spoiler in Kawartha.

Masters
This one is over folks as Jake Collison goes four for five in 2009 and takes a 145-point lead going into the final. Collison’s 594-point total is the highest among all classes as nearly 40 different drivers took a shot at the green flag and a race win.

Rotax Micro Max/TaG Novice
In the first of the two-stroke classes, Tyler Ripani leads the TaG drivers while Clay Van Eerd leads the Micro Max drivers. Talk is most all drivers will be at Kawartha with Micro Max packages. Ripani had a stellar run at the Canadians Nationals in his first Micro race. Look for Taegen Poles to make the switch as well.

Rotax Mini Max
One of the tightest points battles in the championship, Rotax Mini Max has seen great racing action this season. Grant Quinlan leads the way with 408 points, taking the win in the opening two rounds at Sutton. A DNS in round three due to mechanical failure on the starting grid handed Quinlan a major blow. Nicholas Ledson sits in second spot just 11 back from Quinlan. Ledson has been on a tear taking the last two rounds including a Bear in round five. In third place, just 64 points back and having a great season, is round three winner Trevor Rancier, who suffered a very disappointing TDQ in round five. Look for a great battle amongst this trio of very fast pilots.

Rotax Junior Max
Newly crowned Canadian National Junior Rotax Champion Garett Grist heads into the final round with a mathematical lock on the title. Grist takes an 81-point lead into the final round. Grist is the only double race winner so far in 2009 action and started the campaign with four straight podiums in the opening four rounds. In second place, Austin Milwain is winless in 2009 and is poised to take the top spot this Sunday. Look for tight action at the front as race one winner Spencer Todd in third and rookie Cameron Morrison in fourth look to make their mark on 2009.

Rotax Senior Max
Karting veteran Lorenzo Mandarino heads into Kawartha with a 38-point lead over Michael Glaze, who sits bridesmaid in no less than three classes. Glaze took round one as Mandarino sat on the sidelines with a broken clutch. Mandarino would charge back going three straight to grab the points lead. Round five saw Brad Forbes take the Bear as Glaze and Mandarino struggled for pace in the final. Forbes could leap up the standings when drops get calculated in the mix. This class has seen huge grids in 2009 with 39 karts taking the green at round three in Mosport. Look for an amazing race on Sunday as drivers throw caution out the window and go checkers or wreckers.

Rotax DD2 Max
Team Canada DD2 member and 2009 FWT DD2 Champion Darren White leads by 130 ticks over Eric Simon giving him a lock on the DD2 title, his second title in 2009. White opened the 2009 campaign with back-to-back wins only to be bested by newly minted Canadian National DD2 Champion, Frank Launi, who took rounds three and four. Michael DiMeo stole the show and the Bear at Shannonville as the leaders struggled on track. In third spot Matt France has been in the hunt all season and is only 20 back of Simon. Also, in the chase for second is Brendon Bain coming off a great run in round five.

Topping the standings with consistent runs is Joe DeMarco, who takes 409 points into the final round, 39 up on second place Max Gamble. Neither DeMarco nor Gamble have scored a win in 2009. In third spot, just one point behind Gamble, is Ryan Horses who took the round four win at Flamboro. Zach Meyers sitting fourth took rounds one and two and has yet to score a top since. Look for Meyers to bounce back and challenge the leaders for the win and some end of season bragging rights.

So far in 2009 the BSRKC has seen record turnouts at every event. Averaging nearly 250 entries per weekend has guaranteed solid grids and amazing racing. Round five of the championship saw record entries at Shannonville for the annual Bear Hunt. Helped by two extra days of action and several extra classes, 494 karts lined up on the track for great racing action.

“This season has been stellar for all involved in our series,” states Jake Collison, President Waterloo Regional Kart Club. “No doubt we have had our challenges throughout the year, but everyone has rallied and voted with their entry fees. We couldn’t be happier.”

No series can run without the great help and support from the karting community. This weekend’s round six at Kawartha Downs is generously sponsored by Kawartha Speedway & Derek Lynch, CF Groups & Cole Cacciavillani and Quinlan Inc. & Todd Quinlan.
